Seoul to Gyeongju: Trains, Buses and the Final City Transfer

Cover comparing trains, buses, driving and onward travel from Seoul to Gyeongju

Compare trains, express buses and driving from Seoul to Gyeongju, with official reference fares, a dated bus quote and the onward journey to Hwangnidan-gil, Bomun or Bulguksa.

Information checked: 2026-10-21

1. Compare the journey to your hotel, not just to Gyeongju

For Seoul to Gyeongju, compare trains from Seoul or Suseo, Seoul Gyeongbu express buses, services from Dong Seoul, and driving. Include the trip from your Seoul accommodation to the departure point and the final ride in Gyeongju. A ticket to Gyeongju Station does not take you directly to a hotel on Hwangnidan-gil or in the Bomun resort area.

OptionHow to compare travel timeMain decision
Gyeongbu-route trainsGyeongju’s tourism guide gives about 2 hours 10 minutes from Seoul as a rough reference; check the selected trainAccess to Seoul or Suseo Station, route, seat class and onward transport
Jungang Line KTX-EumCheck the actual Seoul or Cheongnyangni service and stopsDo not assume the same duration or fare as the Gyeongbu high-speed route
Seoul Gyeongbu express busThe dated example below estimates 3 hours 30 minutes, before traffic delaysBus class, adult fare and the city-terminal location
Dong Seoul busCheck the travel date, direct or intermediate stops, and arrival terminalDo not reuse the Seoul Gyeongbu fare
Driving or rental carAdd current traffic, breaks and parkingTotal vehicle cost and the driving you plan within Gyeongju

The rail time is a planning reference from Gyeongju’s official tourism transport page (Korean), not a selected departure or a door-to-door promise.

2. Search the actual departure station after the rail integration

KTX and SRT began integrated operation on September 1, 2026. KORAIL announced that former SRT trains would be named KTX-Sancheon, with Seoul and Suseo departures searchable in the integrated KORAIL+ app. Older advice that assigns separate operators and booking apps permanently to the two stations needs updating. See KORAIL’s announcement and the transport ministry’s implementation notice, both in Korean.

Compare the actual stations, stops and arrival times. Suseo can be worth comparing from southern Seoul; it is not automatically the best choice for every hotel. On a train with another final destination, confirm that Gyeongju is an actual stop. A Jungang Line KTX-Eum from Seoul or Cheongnyangni is a separate route option with its own running time.

The city lists today’s Gyeongju Station at 80, Gyeongjuyeok-ro, Geoncheon-eup, Gyeongju. Older guides call this rail gateway Singyeongju. Do not confuse it with the former downtown station or the bus terminals. Match the ticket to the address in the city’s station and terminal guide.

3. Read train fares by route and departure station

These are adult, one-way standard-class reference fares from the official September 1, 2026 fare workbook, checked against its route sheets on October 21. They are not a live seat search, discounted ticket offer or final payment quote.

Route sheet and journeyStandard class, KRWWhat distinguishes it
Seoul–Gyeongju–Busan route: Seoul to Gyeongju44,500Separate from the Seodaegu and Suwon route sheets
Seoul–Seodaegu–Gyeongju–Busan: Seoul to Gyeongju44,000Check the actual routing
Seoul–Suwon–Gyeongju–Busan: Seoul to Gyeongju38,000A lower fare does not imply the same high-speed journey time
Suseo–Busan route: Suseo to Gyeongju42,900Confirm Suseo as your departure station
Suseo–Seodaegu–Busan: Suseo to Gyeongju42,600Distinct Seodaegu routing
Jungang Line Seoul–Bujeon: Seoul to Gyeongju44,600The workbook’s current-fare column
The same Jungang Line route: Cheongnyangni to Gyeongju42,900A different origin from Seoul Station

The Jungang sheet also shows a future fare linked to a speed improvement. Do not read that as the current fare. Premium-class supplements and passenger discounts are outside this adult standard-class table. Do not deduct the integration’s advertised average reduction again. The original file is attached to the official ticketing notice (Korean).

A travel-date train query could not be completed during this check, so no specific departure, available seat or final charge is presented as confirmed. Check your actual train on KORAIL’s official website or its foreign-language booking page. Later timetable adjustments can supersede published references; do not plan around an old first train, last train or fixed frequency.

4. Separate Seoul Gyeongbu from Dong Seoul buses

Seoul Gyeongbu means the Gyeongbu/Yeongdong express terminal at Express Bus Terminal Station, rather than the nearby Central City terminal. Dong Seoul is a different departure point. Check the building, boarding area and gate on the ticket. The Seoul city transport guide (Traditional Chinese PDF) distinguishes these terminal groups.

The following official KOBUS timetable was queried on October 21 for Thursday, 2026-10-22, Seoul Gyeongbu to Gyeongju. It estimated 3 hours 30 minutes and displayed these adult one-way fares:

Displayed bus classAdult fare, KRWScope
Standard express24,700Departures displayed in that class
Excellent / deluxe36,700That date’s deluxe departures
Premium47,700That date’s premium departures
Overnight premium57,200That date’s overnight class

Every class is not offered at every departure time. The example does not reserve a seat or guarantee another date’s price. Traffic may extend the journey, and a late-night departure can arrive on the following calendar day. Check transport from the arrival terminal before choosing it.

For Dong Seoul, use the official intercity booking site or the channel specified by the actual operator. No dated Dong Seoul fare was confirmed for this article. Do not substitute the table above. Also distinguish Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal from the intercity terminal when checking your ticket. The city lists the express terminal at 2, Taejong-ro 685beon-gil, a different location from the railway station.

5. Connect the arrival hub to Hwangnidan-gil, Bomun or Bulguksa

A downtown guesthouse near Hwangnidan-gil and Daereungwon, a Bomun hotel, and accommodation near Bulguksa require different final journeys. Save the hotel’s precise address and nearest stop. Do not treat arrival at the railway station as arrival in a walkable downtown neighborhood.

On October 21, the official Gyeongju LIVE BUS service showed route 700 calling at the KTX station, express/intercity terminals, the Seorabeol Intersection/Hwangnidan-gil stop, Hilton/HICO and Bulguksa, among other stops. This is a checked route example, not a dedicated shuttle that meets every train. Stops and their order depend on direction, and waiting time matters. Search your exact arrival stop, destination and travel time, including other routes, rather than relying only on a familiar bus number.

Compare a local taxi when luggage, waiting time or a late arrival makes the bus less convenient. Show the hotel’s Korean address and check the meter or app quote and its inclusions. This guide does not establish a fixed station-to-hotel fare or a Seoul–Gyeongju charter price. A hotel shuttle also needs its own availability, reservation and last-service check.

6. Keep intercity tickets separate from local transit-card value

Buy a valid ticket for your train or Seoul–Gyeongju express/intercity bus. A Tmoney balance does not let you simply tap onto a reserved intercity departure as if it were a city bus. Paying for a ticket with a bank card is also different from spending stored transit value.

The city’s fare notice effective April 1, 2026 lists the adult city-bus fare as KRW 1,500 cash or KRW 1,450 by transit card. Its transfer guide allows one transfer within 30 minutes after tapping out, excludes the same route, and applies a transfer discount to only one person when a single card pays for several riders. Use the same supported card, tap when boarding and exiting, and maintain enough value. Seoul’s transfer rules are not the rules for this journey.

The physical card price and reloadable balance are separate. See our Korea transit-card buying, reloading and refund guide. Bring Korean won cash for ordinary reloads. A U.S.-issued bank card is not automatically a Korean transit card. For a child or teenager, verify the applicable discount and card registration rather than expecting an unregistered adult card to become free.

7. Check visitor booking, payment and ticket collection separately

A U.S. visitor may not have Korean identity verification, a Korean mobile number or a domestic payment method. Choose an actual foreign-language or nonmember booking route, or a station counter, according to the service. Keep the name and identification required for the ticket, booking reference, retrieval password and contact details. A payment authorization alone is not proof that a usable ticket was issued.

The official intercity collection guide says to check the reservation when success is unclear and to bring the booking card for applicable counter collection. Terminal procedures differ; some debit and corporate cards are restricted. Tickets cannot be issued after departure, so allow time at the terminal. Acceptance of a foreign-issued card is not a guarantee that every website or machine will approve your particular card.

The Korea Tourism Organization payment guide distinguishes counter/online purchases from onboard tapping; use current KORAIL guidance for app names. Before paying, check the date, direction, passenger details, price and cancellation terms. If the result is uncertain, retrieve the reservation before paying again.

8. Compare driving and a private vehicle by total cost

A car may help connect dispersed attractions, but driving from Seoul adds fatigue and parking. Check routes, traffic and restrictions with Korea Expressway Corporation’s ROAD PLUS before departure, then add breaks and parking time. Compare rental price, insurance and damage excess, fuel, tolls, parking, one-way charges and return hours. Taking the train and renting locally is another option to calculate on the same basis.

For a visitor rental, check both Korean driving eligibility and the provider’s conditions. KTO’s driving guidance and LOTTE’s rental requirements explain passports, accepted original International Driving Permits (IDPs), any required home-country license, a Korean address/contact number and acceptable payment cards. A photograph or PDF is not an original IDP. A U.S. license alone should not be treated as sufficient. Check age, vehicle category, cardholder rules and insurance before committing.

For a Seoul–Gyeongju taxi or chauffeured vehicle, obtain a complete quote covering exact addresses, passengers, luggage, tolls, waiting, night or one-way charges, and cancellation. A local taxi’s starting fare is not an intercity quotation.

9. Check the return journey before you leave

  • Match the departure station or terminal, destination, date, direction and service class to the issued ticket.
  • Check the final bus direction, wait and last service, or the taxi/hotel-shuttle arrangement.
  • Keep the intercity ticket, local transit balance and any collection card/identification separate.
  • Secure the return plan and leave enough time to get back to Gyeongju Station or the correct terminal after sightseeing.

Start with our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide if needed. For another city, compare the Seoul–Busan and Seoul–Gangneung guides, checking each leg against the actual travel date and current notices.

Information checked October 21, 2026. Bus prices are the dated 2026-10-22 example; train prices are explicitly identified published reference fares. Actual booking and operating information determines the final time, seat and price.
