Seoul to Busan: Compare Trains, Buses, Flights and Driving

Seoul to Busan rail, bus and air comparison cover emphasizing the complete journey

Choose your Seoul–Busan transport by comparing the whole journey, including the arrival hub and local connections. Check current rail and bus changes, published fare references, visitor booking conditions and the separate role of transit cards.

1. Start with your destination in Busan

Compare the trip from your Seoul hotel to your Busan destination, including the local journeys at both ends. A ticket to Busan Station, a bus to Nopo and a flight to Gimhae Airport leave you in different places. Decide whether you are staying around Busan Station/Nampo, Seomyeon, Haeundae or western Busan before choosing transport.

Use the same start and finish for every comparison: leaving your accommodation and reaching your destination. The bus and flight figures are approximate guidance from VISITKOREA’s Busan transport overview (Traditional Chinese), rather than a dated service timetable or guaranteed arrival.

2. Rail: check Seoul versus Suseo, and Busan versus Bujeon

The booking system changed in September 2026

KORAIL announced integrated high-speed operations from 2026-09-01 and subsequently confirmed the launch. Former SRT trains were renamed KTX-Sancheon, with Seoul and Suseo departures searchable through KORAIL+ and korail.com. Older instructions that send Suseo passengers to a separate SRT booking app need updating. See the integration announcement (Korean), launch confirmation (Korean) and SR service notice (Korean).

Choose Seoul Station or Suseo according to the journey from your accommodation, then check the station printed on your ticket. KORAIL’s published KRW 54,400 Seoul–Busan benchmark does not establish the fare for every Suseo departure, route, first-class seat or discounted ticket.

Busan Station and Bujeon Station are different destinations. Central-line KTX-Eum services to Bujeon follow a different route. A service via Gupo may also have a different journey time. Read the full stopping pattern and arrival time rather than assuming all trains take the same time. Compare conventional trains or connections only when the current date’s search actually offers them; an old timetable does not establish today’s service or fare.

For booking:

  1. Enter the exact departure and destination stations, date and passenger count.
  2. Compare each service's times, route, seat class and total fare.
  3. Read the current change/refund conditions and ticket-display requirements before payment.
  4. Confirm successful ticket issuance in your booking record, then check the train, car, seat and platform before boarding.

Visitors can use the official foreign-language reservation route or ask at a station ticket counter. The current foreign-language screen says searches and purchases are available up to 2 months ahead; special holiday sales can have separate rules. A domestic flow requesting Korean identity verification is not evidence that every foreign-language route has the same requirement. Overseas-card acceptance depends on the sales channel and issuer. A rail pass is not automatically a saving for one one-way trip: compare its current coverage and reservation conditions with your actual itinerary.

3. Express buses: match both terminal names

For a Seoul Gyeongbu departure, use the Gyeongbu section of Seoul Express Bus Terminal. Express Bus Terminal subway station serves Lines 3, 7 and 9, but neighboring Central City is not the same boarding area. If your ticket says Dong Seoul or another terminal, travel to that terminal instead. VISITKOREA’s bus guide (Japanese) explains these distinctions.

On KOBUS (Korean), distinguish Busan from West Busan (Sasang). Busan Central Bus Terminal is at Nopo; Busan West Bus Terminal is at Sasang. Neither is Busan railway station. Check the Busan city terminal directory (Korean) before buying.

Use prices after the October fare change

KOBUS currently announces a 9% express/intercity bus fare increase from the first departures on 2026-10-01. Previously purchased tickets retain their earlier fare, but changing them after implementation brings the new fare into play. This is why an old blog’s class-by-class prices should not be copied into a current budget. See the official fare-change notice (Korean).

Check the actual date, class and departure time. KOBUS identifies overnight-fare departures as 22:00–04:00 the following day. A Premium or overnight bus is not necessarily cheaper than your selected train. Recheck the calendar date for a departure just after midnight and whether local transport and hotel check-in will still be available on arrival.

Confirm the completed booking and usable ticket after payment. KOBUS also displays a current notice about suspension of nonmember card payments; do not assume an overseas visitor without Korean identity verification or local payment tools can complete every online flow. Check the current channel’s conditions or ask the departure terminal about counter sales. Counter availability does not guarantee an unsold seat.

4. Flying: Gimpo domestic to Gimhae domestic

For this journey compare Gimpo (GMP) to Gimhae (PUS) domestic flights. Avoid confusing Gimpo with Incheon Airport or heading to an international terminal. Add travel to Gimpo, check-in/security, the flight, baggage collection and travel from Gimhae to your destination. A short flight segment alone does not determine the fastest overall trip.

As a published-price reference, Air Busan’s mainland fare table, based on ticket issuance on 2026-10-01, lists normal one-way Busan–Gimpo totals of KRW 92,000 Monday–Thursday, KRW 104,000 Friday–Sunday and KRW 112,000 in peak/flexible-surcharge periods. These already include the then-listed KRW 22,000 fuel surcharge and KRW 4,000 airport fee. Do not add those fees again. This is one carrier’s normal-fare table, not a live lowest fare, available seat or industry-wide price. Compare the official Air Busan fare table (Korean) with your selected flight’s checkout total.

Read the purchased fare’s cabin and checked-baggage allowance, extra-bag cost, paid seats, sales-channel charges and cancellation/change/no-show rules. Do not assume every low-cost fare includes the same baggage.

An overseas tourist should bring an original, valid passport with a name matching the booking. Do not assume Korean identity apps or registered biometric boarding are available to a passport-only visitor. Korean Air’s domestic ID guide (Korean) lists passports for foreign passengers and requires original identification. Check your actual carrier’s conditions too.

Air Busan lists domestic check-in closing 30 minutes before departure and arrival at the gate by 10 minutes before departure. These are carrier-specific cutoffs, not suggested airport arrival times. Allow time for luggage, queues and any assistance; follow your own airline’s rules. See Air Busan’s airport procedures (Korean).

5. Cars, rentals and private transfers

A vehicle is worth comparing when you have several stops, substantial luggage or mobility needs. Include driver fatigue, weekend traffic, parking and whether you still need a car in Busan. Add rest stops and parking to the day’s navigation estimate.

For a rental, confirm insurance coverage and excess, fuel, tolls, parking, and whether return to a different branch is permitted and costs extra. Foreign visitors should verify the required original International Driving Permit (IDP), passport, home driving license, age, driving experience and vehicle class. Begin with VISITKOREA’s driving guidance, then check the actual rental company’s terms.

For example, LOTTE Rent-a-Car’s foreign-renter conditions require an original accepted IDP, excluding photocopies, PDFs and photos, plus an address and contact number in Korea. The page explicitly includes Taiwan-issued IDPs. Its payment terms allow debit as well as credit cards and describe renter/driver/companion name conditions; do not turn a general guide into a claim that every company requires only the driver’s own credit card. Confirm document validity and card acceptance with the pickup branch before committing.

For a long-distance taxi or private vehicle, request a written total covering passenger and luggage capacity, authorized service area, tolls, surcharges, driver return costs and cancellation. A short urban taxi fare is not a sound estimate for Seoul–Busan.

6. Connect the arrival hub to your hotel

Arrival hubLocal connection to checkMain caution
Busan StationMetro Line 1Nampo and Seomyeon are on Line 1; include the onward Line 2 journey for Haeundae
Bujeon StationNearby metro/Donghae Line access and actual walking routeA different station from Busan Station; confirm entrances and walking
Busan Central Bus TerminalNopo, Metro Line 1Add the onward city journey after the bus arrives
Busan West Bus TerminalSasang, Metro Line 2Do not substitute it for Nopo
Gimhae AirportAirport station on Busan–Gimhae Light RailConnect to Line 2 at Sasang or Line 3 at Daejeo

Use the Busan Transportation Corporation network map (Korean) and Gimhae Airport rail guidance (Korean). A line connection does not describe every entrance, elevator or walking distance. Recheck operating notices, last services and assistance for your date.

7. Keep the intercity ticket separate from your transit card

An ordinary prepaid transit card can cover supported local metro and city-bus journeys in Seoul and Busan. Its stored balance does not replace the ticket needed for a Seoul–Busan KTX or reserved express bus.

KOBUS describes E-pass tapping with a transit-enabled credit card already used for that reservation to retrieve a ticket. That is different from tapping any Tmoney card to pay an unreserved intercity fare from its stored balance. Follow the issued ticket and confirmation rules in the official payment guide (Korean).

See our Korea transit-card buying, reload and refund guide for local travel. If arriving through Incheon first, continue with the Incheon Airport–Seoul transport guide. Allow for immigration, baggage and the airport transfer before booking a same-day onward departure.

8. Before you pay

  • Match the departure station, bus terminal or Gimpo domestic terminal to the ticket.
  • Identify the Busan arrival hub and your onward route, including late-night options.
  • Recheck the date after midnight, passenger ages, seats and luggage.
  • Add local transport and any baggage, toll, parking or return fees.
  • Confirm visitor ID, phone, identity-verification, payment and driving requirements where applicable.
  • Read refund/change/no-show rules and the relevant boarding or check-in cutoffs.
  • Verify successful payment and actual ticket issuance. An unavailable service is not permission to board another departure.

For a first visit, comparing rail from your actual starting point is a useful first step; expand to bus and air when price, seats or timing do not fit. That is a decision method, not a universal best choice. Information checked: 2026-10-20. Recheck the travel date and sales conditions before purchase.
